Canalside Cottages
The Great Glen Way

Spectacular views on a breath-taking walk

Searching for a spectacular canalside walk that is family-friendly, perfect for budding photographers and teeming with breath-taking wildlife?

Journey to Fort Augustus during your luxurious escape to Canalside Cottages, and set your course for the unforgettable 8km circular route to Kytra Lock. Starting from the beautiful staircase locks in the village centre, choose the path to the right-hand side that is signposted the Great Glen Way. Here, enjoy a long and winding (but flat underfoot) canalside path that weaves through the jaw-dropping mountain-ranges and dramatic forests.

Passing parallel to the River Oich, this route is perfect for all ages due to it's even terrain. There are plenty of photo opportunities to enjoy, including the towering peaks of Ben Nevis in the distance, the birdlife that graces the riverbanks and the magical woodland that shoulders the water.

Once you reach the picturesque Kytra Lock, take advantage of the scenic picnic bench and enjoy a homemade treat from your rucksack. Take in the views of three of our most peaceful cottages here (Eriskay, Sandray and Vatersay) as well as the rolling fields, filled with woolly sheep. There are some incredibly tame robins and blue tits that frequent here, so don't forget to leave a handful of crumbs to tempt them into your camera range!

Heading back into Fort Augustus, there are plenty of cute cafes and friendly pubs to enjoy a warming drink after your journey!
