Wells & Walsingham Light Railway
All Aboard the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway!
Step into a charming slice of English railway history with a ride on the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway, the world's smallest public railway of its kind. This delightful narrow-gauge line runs through the scenic Norfolk countryside, connecting the seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea with the historic village of Little Walsingham - a journey that feels like stepping back in time.
Originally opened in 1982 on a former standard-gauge line, the route spans over four miles and takes around 30 minutes each way. As you trundle along behind a pint-sized steam or diesel locomotive, you'll pass rolling fields, sleepy hamlets, and waving walkers on country footpaths. The rhythm of the train and the open carriages make it feel almost like a storybook adventure, especially for families with young children or railway enthusiasts.
At Walsingham Station, you’ll find a charming tearoom and a small museum sharing the story of the railway’s creation and the local history. You can then take time to explore Little Walsingham, known for its religious heritage, quaint streets, and peaceful atmosphere. On your return to Wells-next-the-Sea, there’s the option to stroll along the quay or explore the beach and nature reserve nearby.
Open 17 - 25 Feb, March weekends and daily 23 March - 3 November.
