Learn More About the Area

Salthouse is a picturesque village set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by rolling hills, saltmarshes, and breathtaking views of the North Norfolk coastline. For wildlife lovers and those simply looking for peace and tranquillity, it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

At the heart of the landscape is Salthouse Heath, a stunning stretch of heathland offering panoramic views over the sea and countryside. The area is filled with heather, ferns, and wildflowers, creating a wonderful setting for a walk. It is also home to a Bronze Age burial ground, adding a special touch of history. During the summer months, listen carefully, as the heath is known for nightingales and nightjars, filling the air with their distinctive songs.

Nearby, Salthouse Marshes, managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, is a fantastic spot for birdwatching, where visitors can see barn owls, marsh harriers, lapland buntings, and shore larks. Walking trails and boardwalks offer stunning views across the marshes, providing a peaceful and invigorating experience in nature. The village is also well-positioned for exploring coastal paths and cycle routes, making it a great base for outdoor adventures.

Unlike Norfolk’s busier coastal destinations, Salthouse remains unspoiled, offering a relaxed and authentic seaside retreat. The village green is home to Salthouse Store, a handy stop for fresh coffee, ice cream, sandwiches, groceries, and newspapers. Nearby, the popular Cookies Crab Shop serves seafood platters, shellfish, salads, and sandwiches, perfect for dining in or taking away. On the west side of the green, The Dun Cow is a welcoming village pub, offering great food, real ales, and wonderful views over the marshes.

Salthouse is ideally placed for exploring many of North Norfolk’s coastal gems. Just a few miles north of Holt, and to the east of Blakeney and Cley, it serves as a fantastic base for discovering the region. Visitors can browse boutique shops, art galleries, and charming cafés or take a short trip to Sheringham and visit the Priory Maze, or Cromer, where sandy beaches, fresh seafood, and family-friendly attractions await.

A short drive away, Blakeney offers exciting seal-watching trips to Blakeney Point, home to England’s largest seal colony. The best way to see these incredible creatures up close is by taking a boat tour from Morston Quay, where several local operators—including Beans Boat Trips, Bishops Boats, Temple Seal Trips, and John Bean Seal Trips, have run family-friendly excursions for decades and know all there is to know!

Nature enthusiasts can also enjoy birdwatching at Pensthorpe Natural Park, a 700-acre wildlife haven offering a mix of nature trails, enchanting gardens, and family-friendly activities. Families will love WildRootz, an eco-friendly outdoor play area, and Hootz House, an indoor adventure space perfect for all-weather fun. The park also hosts seasonal events, including a Sculpture Trail featuring artists from across the UK.

If it’s a day by the sea you’re after, the award-winning beaches of Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham are a short drive away. Wells Beach is a gorgeous stretch of golden sand, backed by pine woods and the iconic row of beach huts. After enjoying fresh pizza from the Beach Café, you can sunbathe, swim, build sandcastles, or fly a kite—it’s also a great spot for nature lovers and birdwatchers, as part of the Holkham National Nature Reserve, where you might even see rare birds or seals!

Closer to home, Salthouse Beach is an incredible shingle beach, perfect for long walks, sea fishing, or simply soaking in the coastal tranquillity.

For those interested in historic estates, Felbrigg Hall is a beautiful 17th-century country house near Cromer, known for its Jacobean architecture and fine Georgian interiors. Managed by the National Trust, it features ornate rooms, a walled garden, and extensive parkland, making it a fascinating place to explore.

Another must-visit is Holkham Hall, an 18th-century Palladian mansion set within a vast deer park. The estate offers stunning gardens, walking trails, a cycle hire center, and even a high ropes course. Visitors can also enjoy the Courtyard Café, browse the gift shop, or explore the Holkham National Nature Reserve, which includes the iconic Holkham Beach.
