Learn More About the Area

The Lee Valley Regional Park stretches over 10,000 acres and winds along 26 miles of the banks of the River Lee from Hertfordshire to London’s East India Dock Basin on the River Thames. Roydon Marina sits central to the park with easy connections on foot, by bike, train and car making it simple to visit surrounding towns and countryside. You can even make it into the centre of London in 30 minutes if you feel like a more fast paced day of shopping, attractions and maybe a West End show. 

Roydon Marina Village itself is connected to the River Stort which leads you to pleasant market towns such as Bishop Stortford which features an array of independent stores, restaurants and bars or Sawbridgeworth which is worth a visit for a spot of antique hunting and a leisurely bite to eat. 

The town of Hertford is also a short drive away and here guests have access to shops and supermarkets as well picturesque riverside walks, historic landmarks and plenty of delicious restaurants. 

If you are looking for a day of activity there is plenty in the local area to keep the whole family entertained, from fast-paced, adrenaline-inducing activities to enriching cultural attractions. 

The Lee Valley White Water Rafting Centre is just a 20 minute drive from the lodges. Families can try their hand at a range of challenges from white water rafting, to kayaking and paddle boarding. No matter what your level of ability may be, there are experts on hand to make sure you have gallons of fun.

Rye House Kart Raceway is also a very short distance from the site and this famous venue was the starting point for many F1 stars. So, channel you inner Lewis Hamilton and take to the tracks to see who comes out on top.

For a more gentle sporting challenge, the Canons Brook Golf Club is nearby and boasts one of the best courses in the region, designed by Sir Henry Cotton. Guests can enjoy a casual round whilst they take in the beautiful surroundings across eighteen holes. 

The Lee Valley Boat Centre is just 15 minutes from the marina, where pedalos, row boats and electric boats are all available to hire for a day of water based fun. 

There is also plenty in the local area to keep the little ones entertained. Hertfordshire Zoo is open all year round and offers truly unique attractions from the ‘Big Cats’ such as Snow Leopards and Tigers, to the more familiar farmyard animals. There are many experiences available, guided by trained zoo keepers, where visitors can get up close to some of the animals and create magical memories.  

Even closer to home there is the Lee Valley Animal Adventure Park where families can enjoy themed events, outdoor activities and hours of fun with all different kinds of animals from wallabies to meerkats. 

For these seeking a day of culture, Gibberd Garden is an enchanting place to visit; a place where nature and art come together. The Garden is Grade II listed and is open to the public from April to October, offering a range of events including music, theatre and creative writing days. The Barn Tea Room, provides a welcome respite where you can pause, for a cup of coffee and slice of cake.

Hunsdon Mead Nature Reserve adjoins the marina and is a beautiful area of natural grassland and wildflower where there are plenty of trails for a leisurely dog walk. 

There are several museums in the local area such as the De Havilland Aircraft Museum which is Britain’s oldest aviation museum and showcases some of the most impressive aircrafts and restored World War II aviation memorabilia in the country.

The Henry Moore Studios & Gardens sit across seventy acres of the artist’s former home and studios. Visitors can view an array of amazing sculptures and learn more about one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

When you’re ready to have a rest and a bite to eat at the end of an action packed day there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the local area.

At Roydon Marina itself, there is The Boathouse Café & Bar which offers a variety of fresh food and drinks throughout the day , from a hearty breakfast to delicious evening meals.
