Autumn in the Yorkshire Dales

Top 4 things to do in the Yorkshire Dales this Autumn

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit the Yorkshire Dales; the landscape begins to fade from green to amber and gold, the summer rush has finally come to an end and it’s the perfect excuse to get cosy beside a log fire with your loved ones. Not only is the scenery stunning, there’s also a fascinating history to uncover, countless walking and cycle paths, plus lots of lovely country pubs serving delicious food and drink. Escaping to our Yorkshire Dales retreat is the perfect way to enjoy a slice of rural luxury with the entire family this Autumn and has a host of events, activities and days out to keep your little ones entertained. Here are our top picks for the whole family to enjoy this Autumn:

1. Forbidden Corner

The Forbidden Corner is like no other attraction you will have visited before and very much deserving of the highly complementary reviews received on Trip Advisor. The best way to describe the attraction is an enchanting and bewildering labyrinth of passages, tricks and surprises, enclosed by a picturesque Victorian garden. When you go on a family day out, it’s rare that the adults will get as much enjoyment out of the event as the children, but with the Forbidden Corner, you will be pleased to know, it’s just as much fun for the adults as it is for the little ones. After you’ve explored every nook and cranny you can pop into the Corners Café, where you can get anything from Yorkshire Fruitcake with Wensleydale Cheese to piping hot Fish and Chips. What’s more, it’s just a short 20-minute drive from our lodges in Yorkshire so you don’t have to worry about your young explorers getting restless in the back seat.

2. Pumpkin Trail at Bolton Abbey

If you want to get in the spooky spirit this half-term, Bolton Abbey will be hosting two spooktacular weeks of fun. Let your little explorers follow a trail of over-sized pumpkins and hunt for mystery doors hidden among the trees to unravel the witches spell. The event is free and all you have to pay for is parking. After completing the trail you will be spoilt for choice with places to eat; whether you’re fancying a coffee and cake or a sit-down meal at one of their award-winning restaurants – there’s something for everyone. Bolton Abbey is situated beside the River Wharfe, so is a great opportunity to see the southern edge of the National Park while you’re there.

3. Halloween Children’s Party at Town Hall

For those who would prefer not to stray too far from our Richmond-based lodges, there’s the Halloween disco which will be held on Saturday 27th October at Richmond Town Hall. Tickets can be bought on the night so all you need to worry is packing some fancy-dress outfits and be prepared to get involved in some frighteningly good Halloween fun…

4. Wensleydale Cheese Tour

While visiting the Yorkshire Dales, you can’t miss a trip to The Wensleydale Creamery. Although on the surface this may appear to be a grown-ups dream, there’s no doubt your little ones will also enjoy witnessing the cheese-making process first hand by one of the creameries own master cheese-makers. There is also an interactive experience which includes hands-on games and activities, clips from your favourite Wallace and Gromit films, as well as the opportunity to explore both the viewing gallery and museum. Wind up your trip nicely with a trip to Calvert’s restaurant, with dishes which showcase the award-winning cheese at its finest.
