A New Vision

Breathing new life into an iconic landmark

Once branded the "most dismal" place in Scotland after receiving the Carbuncle Award in 2010, John O’Groats has undergone an incredible transformation, with the Inn at John O’Groats at the heart of its regeneration. The major renovation in 2012 turned the old hotel into a collection of modern, stylish, self-catering apartments, while carefully preserving its historic charm. A collection of unique self-catering lodges were also introduced, enhancing the accommodation options with contemporary yet sympathetic design. This extensive refurbishment revitalised an iconic landmark on the Caithness coastline, ensuring its continued appeal to visitors seeking a blend of tradition and contemporary comfort.

The renovation included upgraded accommodations, featuring beautifully designed lodges and rooms with high-quality furnishings, contemporary décor, and spectacular views of the rugged coastline and open sea. Careful attention was given to maintaining the location’s historical integrity, ensuring that its unique character remained intact.

The multi-million-pound regeneration project was spearheaded by Together Travel (then Natural Retreats) and Heritage Great Britain, with expertise from GLM in overseeing the architectural restoration and NoChintz leading the interior design. Combined efforts resulted in a breathtaking transformation that enhanced the locations aesthetic appeal and put John O’Groats back on the map.

In recognition of its outstanding design and regeneration, GLM received the ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Tourism & Leisure category at the RICS Scotland awards in 2014.  The RICS Scotland Awards celebrate excellence in land, property, and construction projects, recognising achievements across eight categories. They highlight projects that push boundaries, enhance communities, and preserve Scotland’s architectural heritage.

In addition to its revitalised living spaces, the Inn at John O’Groats now serves as a welcoming destination for travellers exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the North Coast 500, one of Scotland’s most scenic driving routes. With its prime location, stunning views, and modern facilities, the inn has become a popular retreat for visitors eager to experience the natural beauty and rich heritage of Caithness.

The success of the renovation project stands as a testament to the commitment of preserving Scotland’s historical landmarks while ensuring they remain accessible and appealing to new generations of explorers.
